The White House has announced its plans to provide 100,000 dollars in relief aid via the U.S. Red Cross to North Korea in the wake of Thursday's train explosion.

In a statement Tuesday, White House spokesman Scott McClellan expressed Washington's deep condolence for the victims of the train accident in Ryongchon near the Chinese border. He added that Washington is willing to provide additional medical staff and supplies if deemed necessary.

Earlier in the day, Secretary of State Colin Powell said the U.S. would respond to a United Nations appeal for emergency relief for victims of the train disaster with financial and other assistance.
