South Korea's state assets rose to more than 200 trillion won or some 171 billion dollars for the first time last year.

The Finance Ministry said total assets grew 3.5 percent last year from 196 trillion won in the previous year.

The ministry said an increase in the value of securities held by the state was the main contributor to the surge in state assets.

Securities accounted for almost 39 percent of all state assets, up 0.6 percentage point from the previous year.
