The second-highest ranking officer in the military command defending South Korea has been arrested on embezzlement charges.
Shin Il-soon, deputy commander of the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command, was taken into custody late Saturday after a military court issued a warrant on suspected wrongdoings dating back to 2000, when he was commander of South Korea's Third Army.
General Shin had earlier been re-summoned and questioned Saturday for a third consecutive day over allegations that he misappropriated some 160 million won or some 129,000 U.S. dollars while serving as Third Army commander and deputy commander of the Combined Forces Command.
Shin, a four-star South Korean army general, is second in command after General Leon LaPorte, who also commands the U.S. military in South Korea and the United Nations Command overseeing the Korean War armistice.
General Shin has denied the allegations brought against him, claiming that he used public funds in line with traditional practices.
It is the first time an incumbent Army general has been arrested or summoned over corruption charges.
