Kurdish Leadership Sends Approval for S. Korean Troop Dispatch

The local government of Iraq's Kurdish region has reportedly expressed its welcoming position towards the dispatch of South Korean troops to the region.

It is yet unclear, however, whether the letter stating the official statement was signed by the Kurdish Democratic Party leader Massoud Barzani or the region's chief administrator.

The Foreign Ministry said it received the letter through diplomatic channels earlier this week.

South Korea's Ambassador to Iraq, Lim Hong-jae, had reportedly met with Barzani last month and explained details of Seoul's planned troop dispatch to the war-ravaged nation and called for the Kurds' cooperation in the matter.

Seoul plans to finalize the dispatch location for the 3,000-strong Zaitun unit later this week. The government has earlier tentatively selected the northern Kurdish city of Irbil as the deployment location.
