Iraqi officials say at least 40 civilians were killed Wednesday in a U.S. air raid on an Iraqi village celebrating a wedding.

Dubai-based Al Arabiya television quoted eyewitnesses as saying the attacks took place before dawn in a village near the Syrian border.

The television also reported that the warplanes had killed at least 40 wedding guests.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post said the U.S. attack targeted a building suspected of sheltering foreign fighters, denying reports by Al Arabiya that the bombings had targeted civilians.
