White House: U.S. Military Commitment to S. Korea Remains Unchanged

The United States says its military commitment to South Korea remains strong and unchanged despite the impending redeployment of some American troops from South Korea to Iraq.

In a press briefing Monday, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said that the planned redeployment of U.S. troops in South Korea should be viewed as part of Washington's global posture review.

McClellan said that the reduction in the number of U.S. forces in South Korea would not lead to a reduction in U.S. commitment to ensure stability in the region.

He said that swifter deployments and a more technologically advanced military are necessary to address many new threats of this age, adding that Washington would be working closely with Seoul to move to address those threats.
