South and North Korea are scheduled to hold a rare high-level defense meeting on Wednesday at Mt. Geumgang in the North.
At the one-day taks, the two delegations headed by a general will discuss measures aimed at easing military tensions and avoiding accidential armed clashes at the western sea border.
North Korea accepted South Korea's proposal for such military talks at the 11th round of inter-Korean Cabinet-level meeting held in Pyongyang earlier this month.
The five-member South Korean delegation, led by Commodore Park Chung-hwa, will travel to the North's mountain resort via an overland route across the demilitarized border.
The North Korean team will be headed by An Ik-san, a major general of the North Korean army.
Wednesday's general-grade talks are the highest level South-North military contact since defense ministers of the two sides met in 2000 after a landmark inter-Korean summit in June of that year.
