Seoul's Defense Ministry announced in a statement Wednesday evening that general-grade officers from North and South Korea have concluded a one-day meeting at the North's Mount Geumgang resort without reaching agreement on ways to ease inter-Korean military tensions.
The statement went on to say that the two sides had agreed to meet for further talks on June 3rd at the South Korean resort of Mount Seolak.
Seoul had gone into Wednesday's meeting hoping to seek ways to avoid naval clashes along the two countries' maritime border in the Yellow Sea.
The South Korean delegation reportedly proposed a package of measures to prevent clashes in the area, including the establishment of a military hotline and the use of the same radio frequencies and flag signals.
South Korean officials had voiced hope that Wednesday's talks would mark the start of regular high-level contact between the two militaries aimed at reducing tension and building confidence.
In recent years, the Yellow Sea has been the scene of naval clashes during the crab-fishing season in May and June that have killed or wounded scores of sailors on both sides.
