The U.S. military has announced that it will set free around 600 inmates from Iraq's controversial Abu Ghraib prison on Friday.

U.S. Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt added that another release will take place on June fourth.

The military has been routinely releasing detainees from the prison, located on the outskirts of Baghdad, which has been at the center of a major prisoner abuse scandal.

Meanwhile, in a prime-time speech on post-war Iraq Tuesday, President Bush said he would demolish Abu Ghraib upon the approval of Iraqi authorities, saying such a move would be "a fitting symbol of Iraq's new beginning."
