U.S. Sees No Future for Light-Water Reactor Project in N. Korea

The United States has strongly indicated that it wants to abandon a suspended project to build two light-water reactors in North Korea.

In a regular press briefing, U.S. State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher confirmed a report by the Washington Times earlier this week that Washington plans to terminate the project.

Boucher added that the United States has made very clear that there is no future for the project.

Under the 1994 Agreed Framework between the United States and North Korea, the Korean Peninsula Energy Development agreed to finance the construction of two light-water reactors in North Korea. Pyongyang, in return, promised to freeze its nuclear program.
However, KEDO suspended the project for one year in late 2002 when North Korea admitted it had pursued nuclear activities in violation of the 1994 agreement.

The Washington Times also said in its report that the Bush administration plans to abandon the project by the end of the year.
