S. Korea, Kurds to Operate Joint Committee to Assist Seoul

South Korea and the Kurdish city of Irbil in the north of Iraq have agreed to form a joint working-level committee ahead of a planned deployment of South Korean troops to the troubled Gulf state.

South Korean military officials visiting the region of Irbil reached the agreement Wednesday after meeting with top Kurdish leaders of the province, including Nechirvan Idris Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdish Regional Government.

The panel will be in charge of coordinating opinions and providing support for the deployment and operations of 3,000 South Korean troops in the Irbil area.

During the meeting with the South's delegation, Barzani said his government will spare no effort in assisting the South Korean troops that will be deployed in the region.

Earlier on Wednesday, a Kurdish official said the Korean delegation is considering an area near Irbil Airport as the location for the deployment of additional South Korean troops.
