The European Union (EU) has approved 9.1 million euros in humanitarian aid to North Korea.

The EU said Thursday that the funding is to be allocated by the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office, stationed in Pyongyang.

The humanitarian office already provided around 200,000 thousand Euros in aid last month for victims of a deadly train blast near the North's border with China and is considering additional aid for those victims.

The EU has provided approximately 38 million euros for humanitarian projects in the impoverished state since 2001.
