South Korea and the United States will kick off military negotiations Monday on U.S. plans for the realignment and reduction of its troops stationed in South Korea.
At the 9th round of the Future of the Alliance Policy Initiative talks, the two countries will discuss details on a plan to relocate the U.S. military headquarters out of Seoul as well as the relocation of some U.S. bases under the Land Partnership Plan.
On the sidelines of the two-day meeting, the two countries will also exchange views on an American proposal to pull out up to 12,000, or one-third of the 37,000 U.S. troops stationed in South Korea in line with Washington's Global Defense Posture Review program.
A South Korean official said that Seoul plans to convey its basic stance on the matter after listening to Washington's overall plans to realign and reduce its troop presence on the Korean Peninsula.
In particular, the timeframe for the U.S. troop reduction is expected to top the talks' agenda. Washington wants the troop reduction to take place at the earliest date possible, while Seoul wants to delay such a cut in troops as much as it can, citing the need for time to come up with measures to support its military capabilities.
