A top U.S. administration official says South Korea, along with six other countries, will participate in the U.S. Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI).
The official said that the leaders of the Group of Eight industrial nations will announce on Wednesday their plan to expand the number of participating countries in the PSI training program. The other six nations that will join the program are Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland and the Czech Republic.
The U.S.-initiated PSI aims to interdict shipments of weapons of mass destruction, their delivery systems, and related materials flowing to and from countries of "proliferation concern" at sea, in the air, or on land.
The initiative mainly targets North Korea.
