UN Security Council Adopts Iraq Resolution

Written: 2004-06-09 00:00:00Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

The U.N. Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution restoring Iraq's sovereignty as of July 1st.
The 15-0 vote capped weeks of delicate negotiations and last-minute amendments.
U.S. President George W. Bush said the measures will set the stage for democracy in Iraq and be a "catalyst for change" in the Middle East.
The measure gives U.S.-led military forces in the country a mandate to provide security in Iraq through the end of next year. The resolution also gives Iraqi leaders control over activities of their own fledgling security forces and a say on "sensitive offensive operations."
However, the measure stops short of granting the Iraqis a veto over major U.S.-led military operations.
