G8 Singles Out N. Korea, Iran on Nuke Concerns

G-8 leaders meeting in their annual summit in the U.S. state of Georgia have endorsed a plan to stop the spread of nuclear weapons, singling out North Korea and Iran for concern.

The anti-proliferation plan calls for a one-year ban on the transfer of equipment and technology for uranium enrichment and reprocessing.

The leaders of the world's major industrial powers called on North Korea to abandon its weapons development and issued an "action plan" affirming their commitment to the six-party talks aimed at persuading the North to dismantle its nuclear program.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the G-8 summiteers expressed strong support for the six-party process and urged Pyongyang to dismantle all of its nuclear weapons-related programs in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner.

The G-8 includes the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada and Russia.
