South Korea is set to kick off its annual large-scale military exercise next week designed to strengthen its defense readiness amid continuous threats from North Korea.

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Friday, the Hoguk field training exercise involving the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Marine Corps will run from next Monday to November 22.

The JCS said this year’s military exercise will simulate various threats posed by the North’s nuclear weapons, missiles and unmanned assets, with a number of U.S. troops also taking part in the drills to boost interoperability.

The annual exercise comes as Pyongyang threatened to strike U.S. strategic assets deployed to the Korean Peninsula after the nuclear-powered USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier arrived at the South Korean naval base in Busan.

First launched in 1996, the Hoguk defense exercise is held in the second half of every year.
