President Yoon Suk Yeol has pledged to expand cooperation with Qatar beyond energy and construction to investment, defense, agriculture, culture and people exchanges.

Yoon, who is set to make a state visit to Qatar from Tuesday, told the state-run Qatar News Agency in a prior interview that he anticipates that the trip will provide an opportunity for bilateral relations to make a new leap.

Referring to Doha's “National Vision 2030” to become an advanced society of sustainable development and a high standard of living for its people, Yoon expressed hope for Seoul to contribute and for two-way cooperation in the initiative.

The president proposed an expansion of bilateral ties beyond Qatar's stable supply of gas and oil to South Korea and the latter's participation in the establishment of the former's industrial foundation, with an eye for joint growth in cutting-edge industries.

With over 60 South Korean business leaders in the sectors of digital, bio, smart farm and cultural content accompanying him on the two-day visit, Yoon said he hoped that businesses from the two sides will have a chance to discuss cooperation.

He also pledged to expand people exchanges by promoting Qatari and Islamic culture and history to the South Korean people to improve their understanding.

Yoon is scheduled to hold a summit with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani on Wednesday.
