The prosecution has proclaimed war on so-called unsafe food products in the wake of what media have dubbed the "garbage dumpling scandal."
The Supreme Public Prosecutors' Office announced Friday that it will strengthen its crackdown on the distribution of spoiled food products by setting up special investigation squads in regional prosecution offices across the nation by October 30th.
In particular, prosecutors said they will punish the act of manufacturing and selling spoiled foods to the public as an act of attempted murder and deal with violators accordingly.
The prosecution added that it would also confiscate machinery and other equipment used in manufacturing such spoiled foods.
The prosecution's move comes after the Korea Food and Drug Administration released Thursday a list of companies accused of supplying dumplings containing spoiled radish. The food scandal provoked public outcry and distrust over food standards and prompted Japan to impose a temporary ban on Korean dumpling imports.
