Two Koreas Exchange Information on Illegal Chinese Fishing Vessels

A day after successfully testing their military hotline, Navies of the two Koreas have exchanged information on illegal fishing by Chinese vessels at the western sea border.

The two sides used telephone and fax lines installed along the cross-border Gyungui Railway in the first such communication between the two Koreas aimed at cracking down on illegal fishing by vessels from China.

The move is a follow-up measure to an agreement reached at the general-level military talks between the two Koreas earlier this month.

Chinese fishing boats have been known to illegally operate in the rich fishing grounds off the western coast of the peninsula, especially during the peak crab catching season in late spring and early summer.
