The United says it will try to convince North Korea to dismantle all of its nuclear weapons programs at the third round of six-way nuclear talks.

U.S. State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Wednesday that Washington's goal in the upcoming high-level negotiations is the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement of Pyongyang's nuclear weapons programs.

The United States is demanding the North completely dismantle its nuclear ambitions, while Pyongyang is holding out for corresponding compensation for its nuclear dismantlement.

Meanwhile, a U.S. administration official said he does not oppose a possible nuclear "freeze" by North Korea as a first step toward the eventual dismantlement of its entire atomic weapons programs.

The six-party nuclear talks are to open in Beijing for three days next Wednesday. The talks will be preceded by two-day working group talks.
