Super typhoon Dianmu, the sixth typhoon this year, is approaching the Korean Peninsula from Japan's southern islands.

The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters have issued a torrential rain warning in South and North Chungchung as well as North Jeolla provinces.

Authorities have also mobilized public officials and emergency crews to prepare for a possible landing of the storm on the peninsula.

The Korean Meteorological Administration said Dianmu will bring heavy rain and strong winds. With a radius of 600 kilometers and wind speeds of 48 meters per second, the typhoon is stronger than typhoon Maemi, which caused heavy damages in the southern parts of South Korea last summer.

The name, Dianmu, comes from the Chinese name for a goddess who commands thunder and lightning.
