Gov't Seeks Ways to Handle International Consumer Complaints

The government is seeking improved ways to handle international consumer complaints. The Ministry of Finance and Economy said Thursday that increases in foreign travel and global commerce have made it imperative for the government to better deal with post-purchase or transaction complaints on an official level. The envisioned improvements would cover transactions between South Koreans and foreign businesses, foreign consumers and local businesses as well as junk e-mails originating from overseas. To achieve such an end, the government plans to change existing consumer protection regulations in a bid to expand cooperative ties between the Korea Consumer Protection Board and its overseas counterparts. Beginning next year, consumer rights laws will also be amended to heighten protection for product and service users.
