Washington Hopes to Hold Military Talks with S. Korea Next Month

The United States says it wants to resume military talks with South Korea next month to wrap up negotiations on relocating the U.S. military headquarters out of Seoul.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Richard Lawless made the remarks Sunday before boarding a flight bound for Seoul from Beijing, where six-nation nuclear talks closed Saturday.
Lawless, who will lead the American delegation to the upcoming military talks, said it remains unclear whether the July talks will be held in Seoul or Washington.
The two countries were scheduled to open two days of the future of alliance policy initiative talks in Seoul Monday, but the talks were recently cancelled.
During next month's meeting, Seoul and Washington are expected to discuss details of relocating the Yongsan Garrison in central Seoul to a base south of the capital.
The main point of disagreement on the relocation plan is the amount of land set aside for the new U.S. military headquarters. Two days of meetings on the issue earlier this month failed to produce an agreement.
