Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon will meet with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell Friday on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) underway in Jakarta, Indonesia.
They will discuss, among other things, Seoul's plan to send some 3,000 additional troops to war-torn Iraq and North Korea's nuclear issue. The two top diplomats will also discuss when to open the next round of high-level military talks on the relocation of the Yongsan Garrison out of Seoul.
Meanwhile, the ARF meeting is expected to end with the chairman's statement, which is to include clauses denouncing terrorism and calling for a peaceful resolution to the North Korean nuclear issue. Foreign Minister Ban had earlier requested that denunciation of terrorist attacks on civilians be included in the chairman's statement after the killing of South Korean hostage Kim Sun-il in Iraq.
Ban is scheduled to return home late Friday and hold talks with Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday.
