ARF Adopts Statement Denouncing Terrorism Against Civilians

Asian foreign ministers attending the ARF forum in Jakarta have denounced terrorist attacks on civilians in a chairman's statement.

The condemnation of terrorism included in a 44-point statement was an apparent reference to the recent killing of civilian hostages in Iraq, including that of South Korean hostage, Kim Sun-il.

South Korean Foreign Minister, Ban Ki-moon, had earlier requested that such a clause denouncing terrorism against civilians be included in the chairman's statement.

In the chairman's statement, the foreign ministers also reconfirmed their commitment to exerting concerted efforts in order to prevent similar terrorism-spawned tragedies in the future.

The latest round of ARF talks - the 11th for the annual security conference - saw the admission of Pakistan into the group for the first time, raising the ARF membership to 24 nations.
