Citizens to Take Legal Action against Capital Move

Written: 2004-07-09 00:00:00Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

A group of Seoul citizens has decided to bring a petition to the Constitutional Court next Monday, seeking to stop the government's plan to relocate the administrative capital.

The one hundred-50 petitioners will ask the Court to rule on the legality of the bill concerning the capital transfer, insisting that a matter of such gravity should be subjected to a national referendum.

They claim the government is pushing forward with the decision without public consensus, thereby infringing on basic civil rights, including the pursuit of happiness and freedom to work.

Separate from the petition, the citizens' group is considering filing a motion to suspend the parliamentary bill endorsing the capital relocation until after the Constitutional Court's ruling on the case.
