The coastal city of Gyeongju in South Korea's North Gyeongsang Province has been tentatively chosen as the host of the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

Seoul's foreign ministry on Thursday stated that the APEC summit host city recommendation committee held a meeting earlier in the day and selected Gyeongju as the candidate city to host the summit over two other candidates, Incheon and Jeju Island.

The committee members agreed that Gyeongju is the most suited candidate given its impact on national and regional development and its cultural and tourism content and resources, among others.

South Korea is set to host next year's APEC summit for the first time in 20 years after the previous one was held in the port city of Busan in 2005.

Gyeongju will likely be confirmed as the host city of next year's summit later this month.
