Russia's Ambassador at large, Alexander Alexeyev, says that three months - the U.S.-proposed period over which North Korea would freeze its nuclear facilities - is an insufficient timeframe.
In an interview with Russia's Itar-Tass News Agency Wednesday, Alexeyev said it is inappropriate to set forth a timeframe for the North's nuclear freeze when decisions have yet to be reached on the manner of implementing the atomic suspension, and on the subsequent methods of verification and compensation.
The top diplomat added that it would take longer than the proposed three-month period for the North to dismantle its nuclear weapons programs, as Pyongyang insists that mutual trust be established with the U.S. before freezing its nuclear facilities.
Alexeyev suggested the two Koreas, the U.S., China, Japan and Russia discuss what nuclear facilities should be frozen at the next six-party working-level talks.
Alexeyev led the Russian delegation to last month's six-way atomic talks in Beijing.
