Asahi: S. Korea, Japan Pushing to Regularize Bilateral Summit Meetings

A leading Japanese daily says Seoul and Tokyo are seeking to hold meetings between the leaders of their two countries on a regular basis.

The Asahi Shimbun said Friday that Tokyo is considering the idea after a senior official at South Korea's presidential office unofficially broached the proposal to the Japanese government recently.

The paper said a final decision on the proposal will be reached when President Roh Moo-hyun and Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi meet for summit talks next Wednesday in South Korea's resort island of Jeju.

The reports said that if regular South Korea-Japan summit talks are organized, it would mark the first time for Japan to regularize such a meeting. The paper added that, if realized, such regular summit talks would take place twice a year.
