Police are grilling a man suspected of killing at least 19 elderly people and women in less than a year. The man has reportedly confessed his guilt in the case.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said Monday that the 34-year-old man, identified by his surname, Yoo, is also suspected of being behind a killing in Incheon and the recent murders of women in the affluent neighborhoods in southwestern Seoul.
Police are also looking into the possibility that Yoo had an accomplice, pointing out that Yoo allegedly killed 11 people in 2004 alone.
According to the police, Yoo allegedly committed the crimes out of anger and hostility toward women and wealthy people after his divorce.
Police quoted Yoo as saying that he was plotting to kill more people in an upscale neighborhood in Seoul, apparently blaming his bad luck on the wealthy.
Yoo, who had previously been convicted in 14 cases of robbery and rape, was released from prison last September.
The serial killings have sent shock waves throughout the nation, which has a relatively low crime rate.
