A U.S. plan to reduce its military presence in South Korea and Germany may not take place for years. That's according to U.S. military newspaper, Stars and Stripes, which recently quoted a Pentagon spokesman as saying that any significant large-scale changes would not likely be made in the coming months and would probably come about between 2005 to 2010. According to the newspaper, Democratic presidential candidate Jonh Kerry has also reportedly said he favors scrapping Washington's plan to reduce U.S. forces in South Korea and Germany. The paper cited Kerry campaign officials as saying that their candidate opposes the U.S. troop reduction plan and, if elected to office in November, would ask American allies to build up their own military capacity. Washington confirmed last month that it would slash one-third of its 37,500 troops stationed in South Korea. The U.S. also reportedly plans to reduce by one-half its 70,000 troops in Germany.
