South Korea's Supreme Court may soon have a woman among its ranks of justices for the first time.

The Supreme Court said Friday it decided to recommend Kim Young-ran, a presiding justice at the Daejeon High Court, to succeed Supreme Court Justice Cho Moo-je, who is retiring next month.

Pending presidential and National Assembly approval of the nomination, the 47-year-old Kim will become the first woman to be appointed to the bench of the nation's highest court.
