A group of lawmakers from the ruling Uri Party is pressing the U.S. Senate to withhold passage of the North Korean Human Rights Act of 2004. The Act was unanimously approved by the U.S. House of Representatives last week. During a press conference, the South Korean lawmakers, including Chung Bong-ju and Choi Seung said on Monday that the North Korean Human Rights Act could possibly have a negative influence on the upcoming six-way nuclear talks and inter-Korean relations. The lawmakers also said that some 30 other members from the ruling party, along with members from the opposition Grand National Party and the Democratic Labor Party, may join them in submitting to the U.S. Congress a joint statement expressing their concerns about the possible negative impact of the Act.
