The Korean tradition of making sauces from fermented soybeans is set for inclusion on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

According to UNESCO on Tuesday, its assessment body has recommended for inscription “knowledge, beliefs, and practices related to jang-making,” or sauce-making, in South Korea.

While the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage typically adopts the assessment body’s recommendations, it is scheduled to make a final decision in early December.

In 2018, jang-making culture was designated a national intangible heritage.

South Korea currently has 22 entries on the UNESCO list, such as the royal ancestral ritual in the Jongmyo shrine, the “pansori” chant and traditional drum performance, and the seasonal harvest dance “ganggangsullae.”
