Democratic Rep. Andy Kim was elected to the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, becoming the first Korean American to serve in the Senate.

With elections for the Senate and the House of Representatives taking place the same day as the U.S. presidential election, Kim defeated Curtis Bashaw in the New Jersey senatorial race.

The three-time congressman won the Democratic Senate primary in June.

New Jersey is considered one of the Democrats’ traditional strongholds, with Kim’s victory cementing a winning streak for the party that dates back to 1972.

Once he takes office, Kim will become the first Korean American senator anywhere in the United States, and the first Asian American senator from the East Coast.
