Revised media guidelines for reporting on suicides came out Wednesday.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Korea Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Journalists Association of Korea revised their recommendations to discourage copycat suicides.

The new guidelines say the media should avoid reporting on suicides whenever possible.

If a report is unavoidable, details such as the specific method, tools, location and motives should not be disclosed.

The guidelines also stress the need to respect the deceased person’s dignity and the privacy of the bereaved family, while providing information on suicide prevention.

The ministry and the two organizations also added a new rule obligating bloggers and social media platforms to adhere strictly to these guidelines.
