President Yoon Suk Yeol spoke on the phone with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to congratulate him on his reelection.
Principal deputy national security adviser Kim Tae-hyo told reporters on Thursday that their phone conversation started at 7:59 a.m. and lasted for about 12 minutes, and that they have agreed to meet at an early date.
Kim said the two sides discussed the South Korea-U.S. alliance, trilateral cooperation among South Korea, the U.S. and Japan, and the participation of North Korean troops in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Yoon reportedly said trilateral cooperation has become stronger day by day and that the three nations established a trilateral cooperation framework at the Camp David summit last year, adding that Trump also contributed to it during his first presidency.
Yoon then proposed that South Korea and the U.S. continue to maintain a close partnership in every sector, while Trump said he looks forward to continuing good cooperative relations with South Korea.
Yoon congratulated Trump on his landslide victory, and Trump thanked Yoon and extended his greetings to the South Korean people.
