Prosecutors have demanded a nine-year prison sentence and a fine of 100 million won, or over 71 thousand U.S. dollars, for former Democratic Party(DP) leader Song Young-gil over allegations of cash-for-vote scandal leading up to the 2021 party leadership election.
Prosecutors announced the decision during a hearing on Wednesday at the Seoul Central District Court, ten months after his indictment in early January.
Song is accused of providing 20 cash envelopes, totaling 60 million won, or around 43 thousand U.S. dollars, which former DP lawmaker Yoon Kwan-suk is said to have distributed to buy votes from members of the National Assembly.
The Supreme Court last month, finalized a two-year prison sentence for Yoon for his role in the cash-for-vote scandal.
Song is also accused of taking 763 million won, or over 547 thousand U.S. dollars in illegal political funds from seven people through donations from 2020 to 2021.
