President Yoon Suk Yeol’s approval rating has hit a record low of 17 percent, a week after it plunged below the 20 percent mark for the first time since he took office in May 2022.
According to a Gallup Korea survey of one-thousand-two adults nationwide Tuesday and Thursday, 17 percent of respondents said they liked the way Yoon handled state affairs, down two percentage points on-week.
Dissatisfaction with his performance reached a record high of 74 percent, an increase of two percentage points from last week.
Yoon’s approval rating in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, the ruling conservative party’s traditional stronghold, rebounded by five percentage points to 23 percent.
But the president lost support in Seoul, where the figure declined from 22 percent to 17 percent, and in nearby Incheon and Gyeonggi Province, where it fell from 16 percent to 14 percent.
Respondents with favorable views of Yoon’s performance mostly pointed to his diplomacy efforts when asked why.
Among those who expressed dissatisfaction, many mentioned allegations against first lady Kim Keon-hee.
The survey had a confidence level of 95 percent, with a margin of error of plus or minus three-point-one percentage points.
In response, a high-ranking official at the top office said the administration intends to make fierce efforts to win back the public’s trust and confidence.
