Main opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung has urged the incoming Donald Trump administration to revive earlier efforts to ease military tensions and promote peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Congratulating Trump on his reelection at a party Supreme Council meeting Friday, Lee expressed hopes of seeing deeper trust between the U.S. and South Korea, based on the solid foundation of the alliance between the two countries.
Crediting the first Trump administration for contributing to peace on the peninsula by holding the historic U.S.-North Korea summit, Lee called on the Yoon Suk Yeol government to overhaul its foreign policy direction.
Lee said the situation on the peninsula is changing rapidly amid leadership changes in the U.S. and Japan, as well as the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia to support the military offensive in Ukraine.
Calling for practical diplomacy, the opposition leader pledged his party’s best efforts to resolve the economic and security crisis through effective legislation and policies.
