North Korea has deported a South Korean from the industrial park under construction in its border city of Gaesong. The deportation, the first of its kind, is in accordance with an inter-Korean agreement aimed at guaranteeing the security of South Korean laborers who work across the border in the communist North. The Paju Police Station in Gyeonggi province said it took custody of the man. However, it remains to be seen whether the man underwent interrogation in North Korea before he was handed over to Southern authorities. The Paju police said it had arrested the 22-year-old man on charges of injuring one of his South Korean co-workers by stabbing him in the thigh. The man, identified by his last name Choi, claimed the victim had been staring at him in an unpleasant way. The injured man was also returned to the South to receive treatment. In January, the two Koreas adopted a security guarantee for the safety of South Koreans staying at the Gaesong industrial complex or the scenic Northern resort of Mount Geumgang. The accord provides assurances that South Koreans accused of criminal activity will not to be investigated or prosecuted in North Korea.
