Rescue workers on Saturday found the body of one of the 12 missing crew members of a fishing boat that sank off Jeju Island on Friday.
According to the Jeju branch of the Korea Coast Guard, a body was retrieved in waters 24 kilometers northwest of Hallim Port at 11:18 p.m. Saturday and transported to Jeju Port at 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
The body was identified as the deck officer of the sunken Geumseong vessel, a South Korean in his 60s.
The Coast Guard said that the Navy's Gwangyang rescue vessel launched an underwater search at the site of the accident, using the remotely operated underwater vehicle at around 8 p.m. Saturday, and found a body near the sunken vessel at around 9 p.m.
The boat was carrying 27 crew members, including 16 South Koreans and eleven Indonesians. Fifteen were rescued, but two of them, both South Koreans, were later pronounced dead.
With Saturday's retrieval of a body, the number of deaths from the sunken vessel increased to three, with eleven people missing.
