The opposition will submit a revised version of its bill mandating a special prosecutor to investigate allegations against first lady Kim Keon-hee, limiting the scope of the probe in an apparent effort to win votes from the ruling party when the bill returns to parliament for a revote after an expected presidential veto.

According to main opposition Democratic Party spokesperson Han Min-soo on Monday, the bill, set to be submitted during Thursday’s plenary session, solely concerns stock manipulation and interference in the ruling party's candidate nominations.

The bill also makes it possible for a third party to recommend a special prosecutor candidate, Han said.

The ruling party opposed a similar bill that the opposition tabled in October, under which only the opposition would have been allowed to recommend candidates.

At a party Supreme Council meeting, Democratic Party floor leader Park Chan-dae said the opposition is open to negotiating the details of the revised bill with the ruling party.

The main opposition plans to launch a campaign Monday in 17 major cities and provinces, with the aim of collecting signatures from ten million people denouncing the alleged influence-peddling and calling for the special investigation.
