If the opposition unilaterally passes a bill mandating a special counsel investigation targeting first lady Kim Keon-hee, ruling People Power Party floor leader Choo Kyung-ho has said he will strongly recommend a presidential veto.
At a party Supreme Council meeting Monday, Choo said the ruling party firmly opposes the "unconstitutional and bad" bill, saying it infringes on human rights and violates the principle of the separation of powers.
The South Korean government’s legislative, executive and judicial branches have different roles, and Choo was accusing the main opposition Democratic Party’s lawmakers of overstepping their authority and encroaching on the prosecution’s role.
Choo also criticized the opposition for what he called “political warfare” at a time when Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung stands accused of election law violations, bribery, subornation of perjury and other offenses.
Urging the opposition to focus on the people’s economic well-being and the ongoing budget review, Choo called for cooperation on national pension reform, health care reform and the launch of a population ministry.
