South Korea, the United States and Japan are reportedly coordinating plans for a trilateral summit on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(APEC) summit, set for this week in Peru.

Quoting a Japanese government official, Japan’s Kyodo News said Monday that coordination is underway to hold the trilateral gathering during the APEC summit, set for Friday and Saturday in the South American country.

Kyodo said the goal of the three-way summit is to confirm the importance of the trilateral cooperation that the Biden administration has pursued, as President-elect Donald Trump may underemphasize it.

The trilateral summit, if realized, would bring together the leaders of all three countries for the first time in 15 months.

Last month, South Korea’s presidential office said U.S. President Joe Biden proposed holding a trilateral summit by the end of this year.
