President Yoon Suk Yeol is set to depart Thursday for an eight-day, five-night trip to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(APEC) summit in Peru and the Group of 20(G-20) summit in Brazil.
Principal deputy national security adviser Kim Tae-hyo said during a briefing at the presidential office on Tuesday that as South Korea will chair next year’s APEC summit, Yoon will lead discussions to create a free, stable trade and investment environment.
Kim also announced that Yoon will hold a summit with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte.
Senior Secretary for Economic Affairs Park Chun-sup said the visit will also strengthen the mutually beneficial cooperative partnership between the two countries, focusing on supply chains and the digital sector, while multiple memorandums of understanding will be signed.
After the trip to Peru, Yoon will travel to Rio de Janeiro, where he will attend the G-20 summit and aim to connect South Korea’s contributions to alleviating hunger and poverty with the summit’s theme, “building a just world and a sustainable planet.”
Kim said bilateral meetings are being arranged with several countries on the sidelines of the G-20 summit, including Vietnam, Mexico, Brunei and Japan.
Meanwhile, an official with the presidential office said Seoul-Tokyo and Seoul-Beijing summits are highly likely and the top office is currently in talks to arrange the meetings.
The official said Seoul, Washington and Tokyo are also actively seeking to hold a trilateral summit.
However, a meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is unlikely to take place en route or on Yoon's way back from South America.
The official said the top office is in close communication with Trump's team, but the president-elect is currently focused on appointments and pressing domestic issues.
