The minister of trade, industry and energy has met with automotive and battery industry representatives ahead of Donald Trump’s return to power in the U.S.

The ministry announced on Wednesday that the meeting took place earlier in the day, with participants highlighting the importance of South Korean companies to the U.S. economy.

They said South Korean companies have continually invested in the advanced manufacturing sector in the U.S., establishing local parts supply chains and creating high-quality jobs.

The industry representatives called on the government to maintain the close economic partnership with the U.S.

Ahn said it’s crucial to respond swiftly to any changes in U.S. policies, given that the automotive and battery sectors make up a significant portion of South Korea’s exports and are focused on the U.S. market.

As of last year, the auto and battery industries accounted for 16 percent of South Korea’s total exports.
