A court review is underway for pretrial detention warrants for four people suspected of involvement in election nomination meddling involving first lady Kim Keon-hee, as well as illegal polling.

The Changwon District Court started the warrant hearings Thursday afternoon for power broker Myung Tae-kyun, former ruling People Power Party(PPP) Rep. Kim Young-sun and two others.

Myung is suspected of receiving some 76 million won, or around 54-thousand U.S. dollars, from the former lawmaker between August 2022 and November 2023.

He allegedly received the money in return for helping the latter secure a nomination in general elections through his ties with the first lady.

Prior to the court hearing, Myung said he had nothing to say, while Kim implicitly denied transferring the money to Myung in return for the nomination.

Two other people who sought candidacy in the 2022 by-elections are alleged to have handed over some 240 million won to Myung’s polling agency, both of them expecting his support.

The court’s decision on the warrants is expected late Thursday.
