The special counsel bill mandating an investigation for first lady Kim Keon-hee has passed in the National Assembly.

The main opposition Democratic Party introduced the bill, its third attempt following presidential vetoes for previous bills, and all 191 lawmakers present voted in its favor in a plenary session on Thursday.

All the lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party, which has a minority in parliament, chose to walkout in protest of the vote.

Since the past versions failed, the bill was amended to narrow the scope of the special prosecutor’s investigation, which now concerns only the Deutsche Motors stock manipulation case and influence-peddling allegations related to power broker Myung Tae-gyun.

The bill also gives the chief justice of the Supreme Court the right to recommend candidates for the special prosecutor post, but the opposition party can reject any nominee it deems unsuitable.
